Do Now: Describe how you might feel if you were a soldier fighting in Afghanistan, Iraq, Vietnam, or any of the wars your friends and family may have experienced. What are your fears?

Today we are analyzing an excerpt from Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried.

We will be focusing on the following literary techniques:

Author's point of view
Direct/ indirect characterization
Setting.
We will analyze how the author uses all of these techniques to create a powerful portrait of Curt Lemon.
Homework:
Retell one of the episodes we've discussed today in first person narrative. You are either the dentist or Curt. Remember to present your character's thoughts, feelings, motivation, conflicts etc. that will help your reader to understand your character. No rough draft...No laptop!
