Do Now: You've had enough of your boyfriend/girlfriend! Write a letter breaking up with him/her.  Include at least two reasons why you want out of the relationship. (Just role play, please. It doesn't matter if it's true or not.)
Today we are focusing on persuasuive appeals and literary techniques that Thomas Jefferson used in the "Declaration of Independence".
1. Review definitions for Logical and Emotional Appeals.
2. Ethical Appeals prove that the speaker or writer is an honorable man, has experience with the topic, and/or will do the right or moral thing.
3. Parallelism is a literary technique involving repeated use of sentences, clauses, or phrases with identical or similar structures. The Declaration of Independence is filled with examples of parallelism.

We will be reading excerpts from this document and answering the reading questions on your handout to analyze the format of this ultimate "break-up letter".
The handout is available online at pbworks if you need another copy. Click here.
Homework: You will brainstorm and fill out steps 1 and 2 on My Declaration Graphic Organizer. Who or what are you declaring independence from? List at least five reasons or grievances that have prompted you to take action. It is due tomorrow. ( 50 points )
