At the end of today's class you'll be able to :
1. Define and identify poetic terms.
2. Analyze the theme and message of a poem.
3. Create a list for your own catalog poem.

Do Now: Journal - 5 line minimum/ 5 minutes
Write 5 lines describing your last job/work. What kind of mood were you in at work? What did you do? Were you tired? Did you sing while you worked? Anything you want to say is good.

Today is our first poetry session:
Open the powerpoint fro the vocabulary for this unit.

"I Hear America Singing" - Walt Whitman

I Hear America singing, the varied carols I hear;
Those of mechanics—each one singing his, as it should be, blithe and strong;
The carpenter singing his, as he measures his plank or beam,
The mason singing his, as he makes ready for work, or leaves off work;
The boatman singing what belongs to him in his boat—the deckhand singing on the steamboat deck;
The shoemaker singing as he sits on his bench—the hatter singing as he stands;
The wood-cutter’s song—the ploughboy’s, on his way in the morning, or at the noon intermission, or at sundown;
The delicious singing of the mother—or of the young wife at work—or of the girl sewing or washing—Each singing what belongs to her, and to none else;
The day what belongs to the day—At night, the party of young fellows, robust, friendly,
Singing, with open mouths, their strong melodious songs.

Homework: Create your own catalog. List 7 or 8 people who are a part of the group. What do they do? What role do they play in the group? What kind of song might they sing? We will not be collecting this. It needs to remain in your notebook. ( 30 points )
