Do Now: Review these definitions of figurative language: simile, metaphor, personification. Copy the definitions in your notebook under vocabulary. (5 minutes)
Simile :A comparison using “like” or “as.”

Metaphor : The author writes that an object or person “is” or “was” another thing.

1. Review the Proctors' marriage with these quotations: Are they metaphors?

2. Mary Warren is an official of the court. P. 28 -30. Clips from the movie illustrate the hysteria!
Thirty-nine people have been arrested. Mary sews a doll ( poppet ) for Elizabeth. Elizabeth has been accused, but Mary has the charge dismissed. Goody Osburn will hang. Sarah Good will not hang; she has confessed and she's pregnant!
Important quotations:

Why does she call my name...I am no Goody Good who sleeps in ditches, nor Osburn, drunk and half-witted. She'd dare not call out such a farmer's wife but there be monstrous profit in it.
Homework: You've seen and read the beginnings of hysteria in Salem. Who is to blame? The girls? The judges. The townspeople? All of them?  Write your response with at least three reasons for your opinion. This will be turned in tomorrow. (50 points)
