Ralph Waldo Emerson - Nature
 Background Information - Review the Romantics' main ideas.
1. Being close to nature is how man discovers truth. Nature holds the secret to understanding, living a good life, and finding God.
2. Innocence and imagination are valued. See the world around you with a transparent eyeball.
3. Emerson believed that even though life is harsh, you can find solace ( or comfort ) by truly becoming one with Nature.
    You must transcend or go beyond everyday experience to understand the world and yourself.
4. The message is optimistic. Even though you are suffering now, life will get better
5. Emerson is the first of the Transcendentalists we will study.

Reading Questions:
1. What does Emerson mean when he says most people do not see the sun?
2. How does Emerson define a lover of nature?
3. "A wild delight runs through the man in spite of real sorrows." Emerson is exhilarated   by nature. What does this mean?
4. I am not alone in the fields and woods. Is there comfort in this?
Homework:
Emerson writes that in the company of nature he becomes a transparent eyeball. Describe this image in your own words. How does it contribute to the essay's main idea? ( 50 points )
