Do Now: You are going to write your own Declaration of Independence today. Thomas Jefferson wanted to declare independence from the king. Brainstorm 5 or 6 people, groups, laws, etc. you can want independence or freedom from. List your grievances for each. (They've violated your right to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness in some way.) Decide which one you want to use for this assignment.
BE CREATIVE. YOU CAN DO IT!
Homework: Finish your Declaration of Independence for publication tomorrow...laptops!
Classwork:
1. Review Jefferson's list of grievances. "He Has..."
2. Select one idea only from your brainstormed list. ( one person, group, law, rule, etc ) This should be a topic you really care about!
3. Organize your declaration using Jefferson's first two paragraphs as a guide.
The first paragraph is your ethical appeal.
The second paragraph is your logical appeal.
4.. List your specific grievances. This is your evidence that there is an injustice - so be sure to use loaded words and parallelism. You will need at least 5 grievances. Use Jefferson's format..."you/they have or he/ she has..."
This is where you'll use emotional appeals.
5. Tell the specific course of action you are going to take as a result of these grievances.
HAVE FUN!
