Do Now: Pick one of the characters we met yesterday and describe him or her based on the direct evidence from the play. What else would you like to know about this character?
Today's goals: At the end of this class,
1. you'll be able to analyze Abigail, Reverend Parris, and Goody Putnam by using the elements of direct and indirect characterization.
2. you'll be able to identify what motivates these characters to act the way they do.
Abigail Williams
Dramatic reading of "The Crucible" pages 8-11: Purpose Questions.
1. What is unusual about the way Parris prioritizes what's at stake for him : "My minstry's at stake, my ministry, and perhaps your cousin's life? What does that tell you about him.
2. Why does Abigail say she has been fired from her job at Goody Proctor's home? What's 'fishy' about this?
3. How does Abigail handle Reverend Parris' questions that get to close to the truth?
Homework: Do you think Abigail is telling the truth about Goody Proctor? Why or why not? Use evidence from your reading to prove your point. ( Do not remove from your notebooks!)
