Reading comprehension fix-up strategies/or
What can I do when I read it, but I don’t get it?

Strategy Number 1: Try to make a connection between your life and what you are reading.

Handout summary:
Write a free verse poem in the style of either Walt Whitman or Langston Hughes. Only do one poem!

If you choose Walt Whitman, you will be writing a catalogue poem about the activities of your list of people and the songs or types of songs they are singing. Title your poem “I Hear ____________ Singing”. Make sure you include what they are specifically doing. Use Whitman’s first line: “I Hear _____________ singing, the varied carols I hear” and then continue your poem with your catalogue. There should be at least 7 people in your poem.

If you choose Langston Hughes, you will be writing about a situation in which you have been ‘disrespected’ or not recognized as a valuable member of a group. Title your poem “I. Too. Sing ____________________. Fill in the blank with who you are addressing your poem to. Use Hughes’ first line and substitute who you are speaking to for the word “America”. Your poem must follow the same 16 line format as “I, Too, Sing America.”

You may illustrate it, type it , or do anything else that makes it creative. Be sure to proofread!
