Do Now: Give three examples from the novel that show Joe belittling Janie. Why doesn't Janie voice her feelings?

"The town bowed down to Joe, because he was all of these things, and then again, he was all of these things because the town bowed down"
1. Explain Joe's behavior and Janie's and the town's reaction to him in terms of this quote.
2. Explain Janie's reaction to Joe and the store. (p. 72 )
3. Explain the business of the"head rag".( p. 73)
Why does she "bow down to him?"  ( p. 75)
Why is this such an important event?

And what about what Joe thinks about Janie and the town?
1. "Here he was just pourin' honor all over her..." (p. 81)
