Do Now: Joe Starks tells Janie she must be the "bell cow." Why is this remark belittling?
Classwork: It's all about Joe today. How does Janie react to her husband? How does the town react to his big voice?

1. The store episode: P. 57 - "We needs a store uh store in uh big hurry"
2. The speech episode: P. 60 - " So Joe Starks took himself and his cigar to the center of the floor."
     "Janie made her face laugh after a short pause, but it wasn't too easy."
3. The lamp-lighting episode: P. 63 - "Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine."
     "A feeling of coldness and fear came over her. She felt far away from things and lonely."
4. The new house episode: P. 65 - "But any man who walks in the way of property and power is bound to meet hate."
    "He's got uh throne in the seat of his pants." "What Ah don't like about the man is, he talks tuh unlettered folks wid books in his jaws."
