Do Now: Explain the following quotation from the beginning of the third excerpt on your handout. Re-read this paragraph to help your explanation.

1. Select quotations from the Douglass text that illustrate his outstanding use of language to persuade his readers that slavery is dehumanizing. Consider similes, metaphors, imagery, and parallel structure.

2.  Harriet A. Jacobs - (1813 ?–1897): Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Written by Herself 

Annotate the informational text that precedes the excerpt. Focus on main ideas and summarizing the text. 

Identify evidence of dehumanization and internal and external conflict in the excerpts from her book.
