Do Now: You have moved to a new city to work. You have just gotten off the bus after a two - day trip. You have never been here before. You know no one. You have a few clothes with you and $47.50 in your pocket.  What’s the first thing you’ll do? The second? Why?
Classwork:
Historical background:
We are leaving the Puritans and their religious beliefs and looking at Rationalism and The Age of Reason.
1.     Puritans relied on religious faith to live their lives. The Rationalists discover the truth by using their mind and intellect.
2.     Puritans believed that man is basically a sinner. Rationalists stressed human goodness. The best form of worship is to do good for others
The Autobiography by Benjamin Franklin:
Benjamin Franklin's The Autobiography

Philadelphia waterfront and Franklin's form of transportation from Boston
Market Street, early 1700's
Read the beginning sections of The Autobiography - focusing on chronological text organization and inferences you can make about Franklin's character.
