Do Now: Is verbal abuse as damaging as physical abuse? Why?
Classwork: Joe develops his big voice, but what about Janie?
Key quotations: Chapter 5
p.58: "Jody told her to dress up and stand in the store all evening...She must look on herself as the bell-cow, the other women were the gang"
p. 61: "Thank you for your compliments, but my wife don't know nothin' 'bout no speech-makin'. Ah never married her for nothin' lak dat."
p.64: " Ah told you in de very first beginnin' dat Ah wanted tuh be a big voice. You oughta be glad, 'cause dat makes uh big woman oughta you."
p.66: "But any man who walks in the way of power and property is bound to meet hate."
p. 68: Ah often wonder how dat little wife uh his'n makes out wid him, 'cause he's uh man dat changes everything, but nothin' don't change him."
Janie takes another look at Joe.
"The town bowed down to Joe, because he was all of these things, and then again, he was all of these things because the town bowed down"

Homework:  Begin selecting quotes that illuminate Janie's relationship with Nanny for a wiki project. Identify three aspects of Nanny's character you will focus on. Check your notes for quotes that will support your claims.
