Do Now: How has Janie changed during the course of this marriage? Joe? Consider how each views the other as well as how they view themselves.
Classwork: Life after emotional and physical abuse - Joe's reaction? Janie's? The town's?
1. Why does Joe refuse to eat Janie's soup? (p. 102)
2. "People came and went in the house...without taking the least notice of her as Joe's wife... They came in the store and ostentatiously looked over what ever she was doing and went to report to him at the house." (p. 103)
3. The final conversation ( p.105)
4. Joe Starks - The relationship from his perspective.
Consider what you admire about him as well as what you feel is unacceptable behavior.
Homework: Evaluate Joe's character. The format is up to you: a letter to Janie, an editorial for the newspaper, a death bed conversation, an essay, etc. Due tomorrow. (100 test-grade points)
