Do Now: Your house is burning out of control. Everyone is safe. What are your emotions as you watch the fire? What possessions will you miss the most? ( minimum of 5 lines in 5 minutes)
Getting to know the Puritans:
The Puritans have shaped America's moral. ethical, political and religious beliefs. During the 1600's, this group of settlers from England starting arriving on American shores. They believed in thrift, simplicity, hard work, and self sufficiency. Because the Puritans believed that wealth was a sigh of God's favor, they strove to attain it. Yet, they considered it sinful to place too much pride in personal possessions... A BASIC CONFLICT!!
Consider the conflict that Anne Bradstreet speaks of in her poem. ( handouts )
Reading Questions:
1.     Bradstreet speaks of another “house” in an extended metaphor at the end of the poem. What is this house, who is its architect, and how is it better than the house she has lost?

2.   Is this poem an example of Puritan thinking? Why? Use evidence from the poem to prove your point.
Homework: Finish your reading questions. We will check your handouts during class.
