At the end of today's class, you will:

1. know the basic procedures and rules we will follow
2. be familiar with the types of material we will be covering this year
3. be able to open a gmail account
4. begin to think about your personal goals

Class Content

• We will be reading American Literature this year: poetry, novels, short stories, and works of non-fiction that will allow you to appreciate the beauty and development of this body of literature. Among the authors we'll be reading are Arthur Miller, Walt Whitman, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Hemingway, and Maya Angelou. You'll also have the opportunity to read novels, plays, poetry, and non-fiction that you select.

• We will be writing every day, either in your journal or more formal situations. At the end of this year, you'll be able to produce well-organized, effective essays. You will have the opportunity to express your creativity and develop your skills as a writer. You'll have the ability to edit and revise your work.

• We will be learning the basic skills you'll need to prepare you for your senior project. The eleventh grade term paper will introduce you to formal research and presentation skills. By the end of this year you will be able to understand how to gather, evaluate, organize and present information.

• In addition, we will be using laptops two or three days a week in this class. This is such an exciting way to make what we are learning come alive - from producing Power Points, comics, movies, music, your own blogs, wikis - it's fantastic!
